The
love of magic and all things mystical has been a part of Harry
Anderson's life from a very young age. Anderson was born in
Newport, Rhode Island on October 14, 1952. His parents divorced
when he was very young, but they took turns raising him. Anderson
lived much of his childhood with his mother, who was one of
the first female card dealers in Las Vegas during the 1950's.
Throughout his teens, Anderson's mother would take employment
wherever she could and would often move her family from one
city to the next.
After going to live with his father in California in 1962, Harry
developed an interest in magic and participated in a magic club
in Junior High. Graduating valedictorian from High School, Harry
chose magic and street performing instead of furthering his
formal education.
His work on the streets led to bigger things, and while performing
at Hollywood's Magic Castle he was spotted by an agent. He was
quickly booked in Las Vegas, which led to appearances on Saturday
Night Live, a recurring role as Harry the Hustler on Cheers,
and then Dave's World. When he auditioned for the role
of Night Court's unconventional Judge Harry Stone, the
producers couldn't believe the overwhelming similarities between
the real and fictional Harrys - right down to the fondness for
Mel Tormé.
Today, Anderson lives in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
Though television is not currently in the cards for him, magic
is. He and his wife own a New Orleans shop called Sideshow,
which is billed as a "retailer of fine conjuring tools, carnival
ephemera and obscure oddities." For more information, visit
